I read the kindle version of

Coraline (2002) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ by Neil Gaiman

I read this as part of a book club. I don’t know why I never read anything by Neil Gaiman before, since he wrote one of my favorite movies, MirrorMask. That movie has the same vibes as Coraline. These vibes are dark fantasy with an element of horror.

Coraline was a fantastically written novella written by famed author Neil Gaiman. I had never seen the film, so this was a real treat to have been able to read the book first.

Coraline is a regular little girl, bored during the last week of summer vacation. She and her mother and father have just moved to a new house that is shared with other tenants. Coraline fancies herself an explorer, and she loves to explore the grounds.

One day she notices a door in the living room. Strangely, this door opens up to a brick wall. One day she opens up the door to see that the brick walll is gone! She decides to follow the corridor where it leads, and this is where the trouble begins.

On the other side of the corridor is a house just like the one she lives in, though everything is a bit distorted. She meets her Other Mother and Other Father who want to keep her there to live forever. Her Other Mother and Other Father have buttons for eyes, and they want to sew buttons on her eyes, too!

I don’t want to give too much more away if you haven’t already seen the movie, though I hear that the movie is a bit different from the book.

This is a phenomenal horror fantasy from the perspective of a little girl. I’d recommend this to anyone who likes things to be a little creepy in their books. The book is like a weird nightmare, and reminded me of dreams I used to have when I was a child.
