Dark Waters (2021) by Katherine Arden ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I read the kindle version.

This book, the third in the Small Spaces series, was exciting and very different from the other two.

This time, Ollie, Brian, Coco, Coco’s mom, and Ollie’s father have gone out on a day trip sailing on Lake Champlain. When they get there, the kids are surprised to see that Phil, an estranged friend of Brian’s, is there. He also happens to be one of the classmates that was turned into a scarecrow in the first book.

Phil’s uncle happens to be captain of the boat that the group will be sailing on that day. Turns out Phil actually remembers being turned into a scarecrow, and has been dealing with this fact all alone. Ollie, Brian, and Coco had assumed that none of the kids who were kidnapped remembered the incident, and they are astonished to realize that poor Phil does.

They soon find themselves once again beyond the mist and are stranded on an uncharted island in the middle of the lake. Their radio doesn’t work, and Ollie’s father has become deathly ill from a bite from a snake that came out of lake. They have to figure out how to get off the island, a big water snake and a ghostly axe man after them all the while….

Do they make it? Find out in this entry in the Small Spaces quartet!

As the books go along, they get better and better. I feel like there are a few plot holes and un-realized opportunities in each of them, but I can overlook these for a good story. As I’ve said before, there is a lot of heart in these books, and I really love the character development. I’m wondering whose perspective the last book will be in. Can’t wait to find out!
