Halloween Party (1990) by R. L. Stine ⭐⭐⭐
I read the kindle version of this one as part of book club reading. Halloween Party is the 8th entry in the Fear Street series, a series written by R. L. Stine for a junior high audience. It was my first of the Fear Street series, as this series was a bit over my head at the time I was reading Goosebumps.
Justine is the new kid in town, and to get to know the kids in her class, she has invited a small group of fellow classmates to her Halloween party. What’s more, Justine and her uncle just moved into that old house on Fear Street. You know, the one that’s been abandoned for so long….
This party is going to be rad! Terry and his girlfriend Niki are excited, but they can’t figure out why Justine would pick who she did to attend. Some are jocks, but Terry and Niki aren’t… and one of them is Alex, Terry’s ex-best friend….
Justine has planned a lot of ‘surprises’ as she calls them, and at first the party is the best party they’d ever been to! That is, until things start getting scary. Really scary! And dangerous.
Halloween Party is a non-stop roller coaster of frights. Almost every chapter has a cliff-hanger. It’s not a perfect book, though, as some parts are unbelievable and make you wonder “How?” and “Could someone really do that?” and “Isn’t that nickname a little old fashioned, even in 1990?” I also think that there were a couple of loose ends that stayed swaying in the cool, Halloween breeze… But overall, I enjoyed the book. I’d like to read the Fear Street series from the beginning to get a good idea of the overarching story line. It’s some fun reading at a little more sophisticated level compared to Goosebumps.
