I just finished reading

The Three Daughters of Madame Liang (1969) by Pearl S. Buck ⭐⭐

My copy of this book was bound backwards, where the cover art is on the back cover. It is a discarded library book from Zarephath Library in New Jersey.

This book tells the story of Madame Liang’s three daughters who had been sent away to America and two of whom now come back to China during the communist revolution.

Mercy is a musician, Grace is a scientist, and Joy, who stays in America, is an artist. Madame Liang is a well-off woman who owns a high end restaurant that the government allows her to continue to operate. The book goes back and forth between these four women and tells the narrative of the things that happen to them during these times. I think the focus is too much on the three in China, and not nearly enough on the character of Joy who stays in America.

This book was fine, but I didn’t really like it that much. I didn’t really care about any of the characters and barely anything happens in the book. It was extremely political, being that it takes place during times of upheaval in China. If you’re very interested or have a good idea of what was going on during these times, you will probably like it more than I did.

I know that Pearl S. Buck was a popular writer, and perhaps this just wasn’t a good work on which for me to start. I have a couple more of her books, so hopefully I will enjoy those more than I did The Three Daughters of Madame Liang.

It wasn’t badly written, but the subject matter didn’t grab me, and I felt relieved when the book was over. I’d been wanting to be done with it even when I’d still had 100 pages left! I didn’t have the sad feeling I usually get when I have to say goodbye to a book.

Two stars, would only recommend to someone who loves reading and is interested in this era of China’s history.
