Behind file number 3 is a couple of old R&B/Soul tunes.
Here is a Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio 45 rpm that contains That Old Song/Old Pro. This one came out of 1981.
First is That Old Song. I wonder if they realized before assembling the single that both songs had the word ‘old’ in it?
I got these lyrics off google, and I had to fix some, because they were wrong. So I guess it was a joint effort!
A good song and a love affair/Go hand in hand together/When you think you’ve gotten over one/The other holds on to you forever/I’ve tried hard to forget/Ever lovin’ you/But just when I’ve convinced myself/It’s over with, then I hear/That song that they used to play/On the radio just about every day/And whenever I hear it all I can do/Is reminisce about lovin’ you/That old song that they still play/Keeps me longin’ for the good old days/The lyric and the melody/Remindin’ me how in love we used to be/I shouldn’t be tellin’ you this/I know that I’m out of place/But when I love another woman/I can still see your face, baby/Maybe this is a sign for us/To try and get back together/You can’t imagine what those memories/Do to me every time I hear/That song that they used to play/On the radio just about every day/Whenever I hear it all I can do/Is reminisce about lovin’ you/That old song that they still play/Keeps me longin’ for the good old days/The lyric and the melody/Reminding me how in love we used to be/Think of you and me/Every time I hear that song/I recall the good times/When I hear that song, that song, that song/Makin’ me realize/That I want you back, girl/Every time I hear that song/Keep on playin’ that old song/Ooh, when I hear that song/It reminds me of a love so strong/Mr. DJ, would you please play/That old song/Help me bring my baby back home/Keep on playin’, playin’ that old song/Ba-de-ah-ba-de-ah/Ba-de-ah-ba-de-ah-ah-ah
The B Side is a real B side. More about that later. Old Pro is about a man who lost his girl because of pride and ego, and now he wants her back because now he’s a real Old Pro on how to be lonely.
I had to write out these lyrics, because I couldn’t find them online!
Lovin’ you/Was everything I needed and more/But like a fool I chose to ignore/You ‘cuz my ego made me greedy for more/Now I know/That all I did was waste my time/’Cuz the woman I was searching to find/Was right here all the time/Now I know/’Cuz I’m a real old pro/On love/And how to be lonely/I made my mistakes/Old pro/On love/And how to be lonely/Now I recall/The many times I’ve cheated on you/And all the pain I must have put you through/But you remained by my side/With pride/It felt like/I needed something more/I got hurt trying to even the score/But now I realize/So much more/And I want you back/’Cuz I don’t wanna be an old pro/On love/And how to be lonely/I’ve learned from all my mistakes/I don’t want no more heartaches/Oh baby/If there’s someone/About to make the same mistake/Listen to me/Don’t make your heart ache/’Cuz I know/From experience/It’s the best teacher/ I’m sad to admit/But I know/Take it from me/’Cuz I’m an old pro/I know what causes heartaches/I’ve learned from all my mistakes/I’m an old pro/Won’t you let me have another chance/To be yours/’Cuz honey I know/I’m an expert/I’m an old pro/On love/And how to be lonely/I know from experience/I’m an old pro/ Take it from experience/’Cuz I know/Let me tell you/From experience/Don’t mess up/’Cuz listen/I’m an old pro
So these songs to me were just ok. If I had to pick which one I liked best, I’d pick That Old Song. If you’d have asked me last my opinion, I would have said I hated the songs. I have to admit that listening to the songs a bunch of times definitely helped them grow on me a little, but it’s not like I’m gonna run out and buy all of Ray Parker Jr.’s albums.
Well, what do you think?
I really like both those songs, especially the top one! The words to both are very poignant, and I love the chords they used in the early ’80s sound. 🙂 The words in the top one made my think of a girl I dated in high school and college and was pretty serious about for awhile. I recently found out she passed away years ago and it hit me kind of hard…and it is true that when you hear certain songs, it can really bring back a flood of old feelings… Well, enough autobiography. 🙂 Anyway, I really like both… Read more »
I’m glad you’re enjoying the music! I’m actually having a lot of fun doing this!
I find those autobiographies interesting! 🙂 Keep ’em coming!
