Only One Mother
Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky.
Hundreds of shells on the shore together.
Hundreds of birds that go singing by.
Hundreds of lambs in the sunny weather.
Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,
Hundreds of bees to greet the clover.
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn.
But only one mother the whole world over
George Cooper
Ain’t it the truth? I have many memories as a child of my mother, Maryann. She and Dad put up with our antics when we were at our worst and, although we were bad sometimes, I suppose we were JUST cute enough for them not to kill us. 🙂
In all seriousness, I think I was pretty good most of the time and didn’t give them too much trouble.
My favorite memories of my mom are the times when she played games with us and colored with us. And she did that A LOT. She also sang little songs that will always stay with me, and these are the little rhymes that we will talk about today.
Oh Little Playmate has two parts to it. It was about two children speaking to each other about arranging a play date!
Oh Little Playmate
Oh little playmate, come out and play with me,
And bring your dollies three, climb up my apple tree.
Slide down the rainbow and through the cellar door,
And we’ll be jolly friends forever more!
Oh little playmate, I cannot play with you.
My dolly has the flu.
Oh boo hoo hoo hoo hoo!
There’ll be no rainbow. There’ll be no cellar door
But we can still be friends forever more!
This next one is a cute short one. It’s more like a hand game.
Round Ball
(Make circles in the palm of the Little one’s hand with your index finger) ’round ball round ball put your penny in’ (at ‘in’ stop at the middle of her palm and gently poke it)
(Now walk up her arm with your fingers as you say in a chant—) ‘ONE step….TWO step….
tickle your chin!’ (Then tickle her chin! )
Cute right? 🙂
Another rhyme is more like a poem. It’s a traditional poem, another Unknown author!
Animal Fair
I went to the animal fair.
The birds and the bees were there.
The big baboon, by the light of the moon,
Was combing his auburn hair.
The monkey he got drunk. (or skunked as my nieces know it!)
Climbed up on the elephant’s trunk,
The elephant sneezed,
And fell to his knees,
And that was the end of the monk the monk the monk the monk!
What little songs did they sing to you when you were little? Tell us about it in the comments!
Happy Mother’s Day!
