The Real Mother Goose

Today’s subject is a subject very dear to my heart– that is, nursery rhymes!!! I have a publication of The Real Mother Goose from the 1920s that Dad had in his shop when I was a teenager and another from the 1990s that I found later. If you are looking for an amazing book for a special little someone, or even for yourself, don’t hesitate to buy this one. The thing that makes this the definitive volume for nursery rhymes, (besides being a staggering collection of Mother Goose) is that it has not been changed AT ALL since its first publication in 1916. That’s right,  almost 100 years of beautiful unchangedness (is unchangedness a word?)

I’ll start with a simple introductory one:

Old Mother Goose

Old Mother Goose,

When she wanted to wander,

Would ride through the air

On a very fine gander.

Old Mother Goose must be much smaller than we originally pictured her, or else she has a VERY huge prehistoric beast for a gander.

Next we will visit two old ladies.

Oh Dear

Oh dear,  oh dear,

What can the matter be?

Two old women got up in an apple tree

One came down, and the other stayed till Saturday.

I always liked that one! The next one I love and use it whenever I can!

The Little Girl with the Curl

There was a little girl who had a little curl

Right in the middle of her forehead;

When she was good, she was very,  very,  good

But when she was bad she was horrid.

This one was recited in the movie Mirrormask! Well, partially.  🙂

Last,  but not least, is The Clock, another very favorite!

The Clock

There’s a neat little clock,

In the schoolroom it stands,

And it points to the time

With its two little hands.

And may we,  like the clock,

Keep a face clean and bright,

With hands ever ready

To do what is right.

Tell us about your favorite Mother Goose rhymes in the comments, won’t you?
