There are countless poems that are written by people whom we will never have the pleasure of crediting. It is a shame, too, because many are very good! Here is a humorous one taken from the second volume of the 1961 edition of Childcraft.
A Farmer’s Boy
They strolled down the lane together,
The sky was studded with stars.
They reached the gate in silence,
And he lifted down the bars.
She neither smiled or thanked him
Because she knew not how;
For he was just a farmer’s boy
And she was a Jersey cow!

This other one is very cute, indeed, involving the man in the moon and the constellations.
The Man in the Moon
The Man in the Moon
as he sails the sky
Is a very remarkable skipper.
But he made a mistake
When he tried to take
A drink of milk from the Dipper.
He dipped right into the Milky Way
And slowly and carefully filled it.
The Big Bear growled
And the Little Bear howled,
And frightened him so he spilled it.

The previous poem reminds me of a song my dad liked to sing when I was little. This is how I remember it. ‘Mister moon, moon, bright and shiny moon won’t you please shine down on me. Won’t you please shine on that tree? Oh there’s a man behind me with a big shot gun, there’s a man behind me so I better run. Won’t you please shine down on please shine down on please shine down on me?!’

This is a great post. I applaud you for it! I have a coveted childhood book of poetry. In fact, have been collecting copies (when I come across them) for my sisters. Now, I need to see what you wrote about Lewis Carroll. Awesome blog!
